The Ph.D. program in Neural and Cognitive Sciences (NCS) provides advanced research training focused on the interdisciplinary study of the central and peripheral nervous systems, the mind/brain system, cognition, and on applications in clinical, social, ergonomic, and sports contexts.

The main objective of the school is to prepare researchers capable of designing, building and characterizing nanomaterials and nanostructured materials (NMS), tools and devices that meet the growing applicative needs, to make the industrial production more effective, affordable and sustainable and to meet the growing needs of our society, promoting its progress. The school is meant for graduates in physics, chemistry, engineering, biology, biotechnology, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and pharmaceutical technology who aim at acquiring a high level of interdisciplinary preparation through specific courses and seminars covering also fields different from their own specific areas and carry out research projects in the framework of the collaborations with (inter)national research institutions and industries established by teachers and tutors of the school.

The Ph.D. course prepares researchers with a high scientific profile, culturally oriented to engineering applications. They will be able to develop knowledge, new methods of investigation and design & research activities in public or private bodies, also with managerial competencies. The course is organized in two curricula: “Information engineering” and “Mechanical engineering, naval architecture, energy and production”.

The Ph.D. program in Molecular Biomedicine aims to provide higher education to young University graduates in biomedical – and scientific in general – disciplines, to prepare them for a career in basic, clinical or translational research in the field of molecular medicine, with specific reference to the areas of molecular oncology, pathophysiology, molecular genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, regenerative medicine, and pharmacology.

The Ph.D. Course aims to prepare well-qualified scientists able to critically manage the implementation of EU and national regulations concerning with environmental analysis and to autonomously develop research activities in the field of environment.

This Ph.D. Course aims at the advanced training of students in the field of the Earth System Science, through a multidisciplinary approach, where specific skills integrate with modeling and computational tools that allow to effectively tackle complex problems. Special attention is devoted to the interactions between Mathematics, Scientific Computing, Data Science, Fluid Dynamics, and Earth Sciences.

The aim of the Doctorate in Reproduction and Development Sciences is to provide an interdisciplinary and, when possible, international academic professional training program, aimed at preparing highly qualified researchers in the field of biomedical sciences and, particularly, in the maternal and newborn child health area.

The general educational aim of the “History of Societies, Institutions, and Thought. From Medieval to Contemporary History” doctorate is uniform for all curricula, even though differing themes and perspectives are explored depending on the specific area of interest.
