The Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology is a 94-credit, full-time program. All students follow a defined sequence of training in theory, multicultural competence, research, and practice. Consistent with the scientist-practitioner model, students are involved in research projects throughout their training. This begins in the first year, with an assignment as a research assistant to a faculty member, and culminates with the design, data collection, and analysis of at least one independent research project in addition to the dissertation.

With our partner university, Liverpool John Moores University, Alef Trust offers a collaborative PhD in Applied Transpersonal Psychology. The collaborative basis of the PhD means that you will conduct your research under guidance from supervisors from both Alef Trust and LJMU. Given our expertise in the topic, the Alef Trust supervisor will lead in most academic aspects of the programme. Those accepted onto the programme will benefit from being registered with LJMU, giving you full access to LJMU’s Doctoral Academy.

The mission of the PhD in East-West Psychology at CIIS is to explore the convergence of Eastern, Western, and Indigenous psychologies and spiritualities in the spirit of dialogue and integral inquiry. Our graduates are prepared for professional careers in academia and research, activism and organizational leadership, and spiritual counseling or coaching. Our faculty have a wide range of research interests, among them: Asian wisdom traditions, yoga studies, Integral Yoga, traditional Chinese medicine, Depth and archetypal psychologies, Western religious and esoteric traditions, folklore and mythology, ecopsychology, indigenous psychospiritualities, plant medicines, non-ordinary states of consciousness, and transpersonal and existential psychologies.

The programs' objectives are to train competent health service providers in psychology to provide assessment and counseling services both in private practice or within a mental health organization or hospital. The program’s curriculum and training core were developed according to the American Psychological Association (APA) accreditation criteria and enhance the pre-required master’s degree in psychology knowledge and competencies acquired in such a program.
