The Doctoral Program in History, Geography and History of Art, aims to complete the training needs of doctoral students, their methodological updating and initiation to research through the completion of the Doctoral Thesis. Research Degrees (MPhil/PhD) in History of Art and/or Archaeology undertaking a research degree is an intense and personally rewarding experience. A full-time doctoral student has three years to complete a full draft of their thesis and then a further one year for writing up (known as a 3+1 degree).

A candidate is required to produce a scholarly thesis, normally between 70 000 and 80 000 words, that contributes new knowledge and understanding to an aspect of the visual arts or an aspect of visual culture in a wider sense. The Doctoral Program in Artistic Creation (PDCA) is a doctoral Program of the University of Aveiro (UA) in association with the Polytechnic Institutes of Leiria and Porto.
