The official program of Doctorate in "Architecture and Urbanism" Is organized by the University of A Coruña. Being a unique degree in the University System of Galicia is intended to collect research activities in these disciplines in the Autonomous Community of Galicia, but without giving up its expansion at national and international level.

The program is aimed at training doctors in the different disciplines of Architecture and Urbanism. As it is a question of answering researches with very different fields, the program has seven lines of research that respond to the areas of knowledge typical of architecture and urbanism and that form the student in the knowledge of degree and master. These are:

  • Space and Project in Architecture
  • Structures in Architecture
  • Genesis, Language and Representation of Architecture
  • Mathematics applied to the Mechanics of Continuous Means
  • Heritage, Theory and History of Architecture
  • Plans and Projects. From the Territory to the Landscape and the City
  • Rehabilitation, New Constructive Systems and Sustainability in Architecture

The aim of this multiplicity of lines of research is to be able to collect all the possibilities of realizing a doctoral thesis in the field of architecture and urbanism, oriented to any of its own knowledge areas, in such a way as to offer the possibility of research to Any architect.

Why study the degree

The objective of this program is to allow the students who choose to reach the necessary capacities to carry out a doctoral thesis. This includes both methodological aspects and specific techniques that allow the development of an original research and with the sufficient level to be presented and defended.

The main objective of architecture is and will always be the creation of a work that remains fundamentally for its artistic values. Architecture is one of the Fine Arts and therefore the creation and the process of creation are essential. But at the same time architecture is not an immaterial art, but must be supported by a series of material elements with very specific properties that have an unavoidable effect on the design process. That is why research in the broad sense is a process that is in every architectural fact. And it is necessary to investigate the forms, functions, materials, processes, constructive systems, structural or installations, basic sciences, etc. Also in the aspects of the history of architecture, both for their knowledge, and to guide possible interventions.

In addition the architecture is inextricably linked to the construction sector of the greatest relevance in the economic activity of the country. That is why research, development and innovation in this field is of the utmost importance and constitutes a challenge and a professional opportunity for our graduates.

What is learned

Fundamentally, one learns to do a doctoral thesis. However, its implementation requires that the doctorate stop being a mere receiver of information to become a generator of it. In other words, it must be transformed from student to researcher. In the future, this will enable it to address the challenges of innovation in the architectural or urban areas, which are the ultimate goal of the doctoral program.

Lines of investigation

These are the lines of research of this doctoral program:

  • Space and Project in Architecture.
  • Structures in Architecture.
  • Genesis, Language and Representation of Architecture.
  • Mathematics applied to the Mechanics of Continuous Means.
  • Heritage, Theory and History of Architecture.
  • Plans and Projects. From the Territory to the Landscape and the City
  • Rehabilitation, New Constructive Systems and Sustainability in Architecture

Specific Training Complements

In case the doctor does not have the complete previous training required in the program, his / her admission to the program may be conditioned to the surpassing of specific training complements, which may be subjects or modules of master and degree. The complements assigned to the same doctorate may not exceed 15 ECTS credits and may be made prior or simultaneous to the tuition in academic tuition in the program.

In case of simultaneous realization the students will have to register for these complements at the moment of formalizing the tuition of academic tutelage in the program, which must be surpassed in the maximum term of three consecutive quarters. Failure to do so will result in student disqualification from the program.

  • Technological Research Techniques in Architecture.
  • Architecture Research and Documentation Techniques
  • Theory and Method of General and Urban Planning.
  • Inspection of Structures.
  • Techniques of Graphic Survey in rehabilitation and restoration.

Formative Activities of the Program

From the Doctorate Program it will be encouraged that the student, under the supervision of his tutor and / or thesis director, will carry out training activities aimed at completing his training, in a special way:

  1. Attendance at congresses and scientific meetings.
  2. Writing of scientific articles in Architecture and Urbanism.
  3. Stays in other research centers.

Professional and academic outputs

The current program replaces other previous programs that have been linked to the School of Architecture, with longer duration and that allow us to obtain concrete data. To date, the ETSA has trained more than 50 doctors through different programs. Many of them have joined university teaching, since it requires this requirement. But also many of them have developed their activity outside the university working in positions of great responsibility in companies of first international level.

Recommended profile

People with the qualification of Architect (title in extinction), Graduated in Architecture (title in extinction), or Graduate in Studies in Architecture and Master in Architecture.

Exceptionally, doctoral students with other degrees related to architecture will be admitted, according to the Academic Commission. For this, the academic curriculum and researcher of the applicants will be analyzed in each case.
