Doctorates in Sustainability Studies in Europe 2020

The PhD is a doctoral degree, specifically called a "doctor of philosophy" degree. This is misleading because PhD holders are not necessarily philosophers (unless they earned their degree in philosophy!). That said, PhD recipients are able to engage in thought experiments, reason about problems, and solve problems in sophisticated ways.

Sustainability put into practice could take many different forms, effecting both the individual and the larger community. There are ecovillages and sustainable cities created just for the purpose of minimizing the use of important resources. There are also techniques, such as sustainable architecture, which help promote this ideal.

New Frontiers Ph.D. projects aim to expand collective intelligence and contribute to the solutions to global challenges through original research investigations. These projects often sit at the interface of art & design, digital technology, education, and science, however, this is not strictly mandatory. For example, past projects have involved learning with games, teaching through research, communication technologies, participatory science, art/design as a means to communicate science, etc.

New Frontiers Ph.D. projects aim to contribute to the solutions to global challenges through novel research investigations. They contribute to mobilizing the collective intelligence towards solutions to societal goals, such as those set forth by the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The original contribution of the work addresses questions that are relevant in a research context. The Ph.D. supervisor, Thesis Advisory Committee, dissertation reviewers, and defense jury provide the guidance and details on acceptable content and format of the dissertation.... [-]

Doctoral Program in Sustainable Built Environment

The built environment has evolved to frame and facilitate nearly all human activities. Simultaneously, its constant expansion has become more and more harmful to the natural environment.

The construction sector accounts for an estimated 40% of earth resources consumption and, therefore, has a crucial role to play in achieving sustainability. Urban development has special importance within the broader context of sustainability as well, while current trends predict that the number of urban dwellers will keep rising, reaching almost 5 billion by 2030 out of a world total of 8.1 billion.

The main objective of the doctoral programme is to create an integrated approach to this subject, covering phases of design, construction materials and technologies, service life evaluation and durability, rehabilitation, building comfort and use of energy, construction economics, and management, sustainable urban development and regeneration.... Mode of Attendance: Full-time or Part-time

The MPhil/PhD in Development, Environment and Policy provides advanced training and research experience at a doctoral level in the areas at the intersection of development, environment and policy. The programme is particularly focused on the following:

Environment, energy and development, including climate change and development and the land-water-energy nexus. Sustainable and nutrition-sensitive food systems and agriculture-health linkages. Agricultural, energy and climate policy.

A key feature of the programme is an emphasis on interdisciplinarity – our students are encouraged to blend concepts, tools and methods from across disciplines, eg. economics and nutrition; politics and geography. This is enhanced by our location in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, with its mission to strengthen interdisciplinarity within SOAS. Our students also benefit from CeDEP’s strong links with other Bloomsbury colleges of the University of London such as the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and cross-college institutions such as the London International Development Centre (LIDC) and the London Centre for Integrative Research in Agriculture and Health (LCIRAH).... This course has as main objective to equip doctoral students with knowledge to design, implement and evaluate territorially differentiated solutions for intelligent, inclusive and sustainable development, capable of responding to the needs and expectations of diverse people, organizations and communities.

It proposes an innovative approach combining:

interdisciplinary reading of reality;articulation of the local and regional scale with global changes; and c) co-creation of knowledge with the subjects of development.

Among the competences to be acquired in the scope of the PhD in Development, Societies and Territories are: - To increase knowledge and critical understanding of the diversity of socio-economic development models and their applicability in a territorial context; - To construct interdisciplinary interpretation and analysis frameworks of the problems and multidimensional solutions raised by the processes of development in the communities, organizations and territories, considering the articulation with the dynamics of global scale change, - Combining theoretical and methodological knowledge to conceive and carry out innovative research projects at the frontier of knowledge, relevant to the advancement of the state of the art in the field of the program and in responding to societal challenges, - building new knowledge and innovative public policies to meet local and regional challenges in the context of action research and on the basis of the participatory approach multi-actor and transdisciplinary co-creation of knowledge and experience - Communicate and argue the research rigorously and recognized by its peers and in a way understandable to the general public.... Ph.D. in Evolution of Ecosystems and their Protection

The main focus of the program is understanding of the historical development of ecosystems before significant disturbances caused by human activities. The program accentuates a palaeological approach that corresponds very well with methods of a recent ecological research. The combination of both approaches allows recognizing the extent of the damage, the speed of their changes, and the resilience and recovery of ecosystems, too. This information is an important starting point for modern approaches in the nature conservation, which is the second area of the study program.

The graduate study comprises two parts: a study part and a research part. A plan of the study is prepared by the supervisor and should be approved by a committee.... [-]
