Consideration is given particularly to the following components of the application: GRE and other test scores, undergraduate Grade Point Average, the student’s Statement of Purpose (SOP), and letters of recommendation.
Quality students who have completed a B.S. degree in a non-engineering field such as Physics, Chemistry or Biology and who have completed mathematics through differential equations will be considered for admission to the School’s graduate program. These students typically are required to complete 3-4 additional engineering courses at the onset of their graduate education which will be determined by the School Curriculum Committee in coordination with the College Graduate Admissions and Advisory Committee.
Change of major from M.S. to Ph.D.: a) each GRE score must be at least 150 (verbal and quantitative), b) Ph.D. entrance requirements must be met, c) adequate progress in the M.S. must be demonstrated, d) the undergrad GPA must be at least 3.0 (or its equivalent), and e) a compelling case for the change must be given.

The Department offers the degree Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Chemistry which is designed to better prepare doctoral-level chemists to enjoy productive careers in industrial laboratories, research foundations or academic institutions. In addition to the traditional Ph.D. curriculum, this program mandates that the student acquire the working knowledge of the type of research conducted in industry and of the constraints (both practical and philosophical) under which it is carried out.
To facilitate this, each student is required to spend one semester in an industrial or government research laboratory internship. This internship is obtained for the student by the Department and every effort is made to match the type of work and the company with the student's interests. This is an important part of the student's training that may also open up avenues for future employment. The entire study is evaluated with 240 ECTS credits, contains 8 semesters and lasts 4 years. Out of 240 ECTS credits, 180 ECTS are intended for individual work of the student in the framework of individual research work (IRW), and 60 ECTS are for organized forms of study. Within these, the student completes the compulsory courses Introduction to Research and Seminar (3 ECTS credits each, 6 ECTS compulsory content in total), 30 ECTS organized forms of study are completed by the student in the form of work with a tutor in obligatory Individual Research Work IV subjects (3 ECTS each), a total of 15 ECTS credits) and Individual Research Work VI (6 ECTS credits) and under the Doctoral dissertation (9 ECTS credits).
