Specific admission requirements:

We expect knowledge of basic chemical, physical and physically-chemical concepts and principles to the extent specified for the comprehensive MA exam in chemistry, physics and physical chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry of the Brno University of Technology, eventually at other similarly focused BUT faculties or other university faculties. Other requirements: interest in engineering and scientific work, knowledge of English and good results in the previous study (better than average grade of 2).

Key learning outcomes:

The graduates in the DSP of technology and material properties are able to formulate a scientific problem independently, propose hypotheses and procedures leading to its solving and attempt its confirmation on an experimental or theoretical level. Critical evaluation of published scientific information and the ability to communicate in English - both verbally and in written form, makes an integral part of the study.

Occupational profiles of graduates with examples:

The graduates of the specialization chemistry, technology, and material properties possess both experimental and theoretical knowledge in the field of material structures and their properties. They are well founded in a number of theoretical methods for the characterization of materials and their practical applications (a lot of information is gained during internships at foreign universities).

These internships also improve their language skills. The appropriate choice of subjects makes the students familiar with the theoretical grounds of the specialization. The graduates are also experienced to transfer the information and to present the results at conferences and professional seminars delivered both in the Czech and English language.

Doctoral students are also encouraged to think independently and creatively and to assume technological foresight, allowing them to solve technological problems in a number of operations. The modern conception of the specialization based on the current state and needs of the chemical, electronic and consumer goods industries makes the graduates qualified both for the industrial sector and applied and basic research. The graduate also possesses the basic knowledge of chemistry and physics.

The general basis is extended by special courses that include, for example, the progress of chemistry and physics, nanotechnology, the use of secondary raw materials, bioengineering and the use of chemical and physical laws in the areas of inorganic and organic compounds.

Final state examination:

The state doctoral examination is supposed to be passed at the end of the second year of study. The basic part of the exam consists of a more general basis and advanced parts of the specialization and material engineering . Other requirements include: an assay on the dissertation, active seminar participation and foreign language exam.
I. General background
A good knowledge of general physical, physically -chemical and chemical concepts and laws to the extent specified for the comprehensive examination in physical chemistry, chemistry and physics at the Technical University in Brno and the general basic of the final examination. There are no major questions concerning this area , but the questions can be asked as complementary ones referring to the responses concerning other requirements.
II . Advanced topics of the specialization, Materials Engineering
The supervisor after the agreement with the doctoral student will select two courses (see above) to study in the form of attendance of lectures , seminars and tutorials. It is also possible to take courses in the subjects different from these accredited at the Faculty of Chemistry if they are accredited at other universities. The individual cases are assessed by the Specialist Board.
III . specialization
The supervisor in agreement with the doctoral student will assign a special topic corresponding with the approved study plan which relates to the subject of the dissertation.
IV . Other requirements
An essay on the topic of the thesis
The doctoral student will write a summary (20-30 pages) in Czech or English, which contains data from the literature concerning the theme of the dissertation. The last part (c ca. 4-5 pages) must mention student’s achievements, the list of his/her own publications if possible and conference papers . The presented " Essay on the topic of the thesis " is opposed by the examination committee and serves as a ground for discussion during the doctoral exam. Questions can be asked by all members of the committee. Doctoral student will prepare a presentation in a computerized form either n Czech or English.
